Difference between hortatory text and argumentative text
Hortatory exposition and argumentative text are both types of persuasive writing, but they have some key differences in terms of purpose, structure, and language style. Here's a breakdown of their dissimilarities:
1. Purpose:
- Hortatory Exposition: The primary purpose of a hortatory exposition is to persuade or encourage the audience to take a specific course of action or adopt a particular viewpoint. It aims to inspire action or change in behavior.
- Argumentative Text: Argumentative text seeks to convince the audience of the validity of the writer's viewpoint or claim. It aims to present evidence and reasoning to support a particular position on an issue or topic.
2. Language Style:
- Hortatory Exposition: This type of text often uses more emotionally charged language and appeals to the audience's values, beliefs, and emotions to motivate them to take action. It may employ imperatives, adjectives, and adverbs that emphasize the importance or urgency of the proposed action.
- Argumentative Text: Argumentative writing tends to be more formal and relies heavily on logical reasoning, evidence, and facts to support the writer's stance. It uses a more detached and objective tone, focusing on presenting a well-structured argument rather than evoking emotional responses.
3. Structure:
- Hortatory Exposition: Typically, a hortatory exposition starts with a clear statement of the issue or problem, followed by the writer's opinion or recommendation. It then provides reasons and evidence to support the proposed course of action or viewpoint. Finally, it concludes with a recommendation from thewriterr.
- Argumentative Text: An argumentative text usually begins with an introduction that presents the issue or topic and clearly states the writer's thesis or main claim. The body paragraphs then present supporting evidence, counterarguments, and refutations. Finally, the conclusion summarizes the main points and restates the thesis, often with a call to action or a suggestion for further consideration.
4. Audience Engagement:
- Hortatory Exposition: Hortatory exposition often aims to engage the audience emotionally, appealing to their sense of morality, duty, or social responsibility. It may use rhetorical devices such as anecdotes, vivid descriptions, or appeals to shared values to connect with the audience.
- Argumentative Text: Argumentative writing focuses more on engaging the audience intellectually by presenting logical arguments, evidence, and reasoning. It encourages critical thinking and may anticipate and address potential counterarguments to strengthen its persuasiveness.
In summary, while both hortatory exposition and argumentative text aim to persuade, they differ in their emphasis on emotional appeal versus logical reasoning, their language style, structural elements, and approaches to audience engagement.
Example of argumentative text:
Elections are a means to pit people against each other
Thesis
In my opinion, elections are something that invites a lot of conflict. How could you not? Many people are victims of this election activity, ranging from being victims of intimidation to being victims of bribery. In addition, it is very sad to see fellow prospective leaders dropping each other, this is what invites a lot of conflict in society, whereas in my opinion, elections are a healthy competition by creating visions, missions, ideas and programs that will be addressed by the community without dropping other prospective leaders, therefore I strongly disagree with the current election.
Argument 1
First, the treatment of candidates who put down other candidates is an act that will lead to divide and conquer on a large scale. This is because supporters of each candidate will not hesitate to destroy supporters of other candidates, both physically and digitally. The friction is caused by differences in opinions and ideas between supporters of candidates, this will continue if the candidates and supporters do not have more awareness of the attitude and the way of thinking of Indonesian people to respect each other.
Argument 2
Second, Indonesians are easily consumed by hoax news. The nature of Indonesian society that never fades is to easily believe in news that cannot be accounted for. Indonesian people do not filter the news first, they only care about the candidates they support, they will continue and always drop other candidates even though the news they receive is hoax news and has not been tested for truth. The nature of easily believing in hoax news must be eliminated so that we Indonesians are not easily divided. And from the filtering of hoax news can realize the unity and integrity of the Indonesian nation as a whole. besides that people who make hoax news must have the awareness that the actions they do are wrong.
Argument 3
Third, bribery during the election process is considered a common thing in society, even though it can be one of the causes of division. Bribery can benefit candidates and the community, but it can also be the opposite, which can cause division, and usually these divisions occur in small communities. Small communities that receive bribes will feel happy because they can help the family economy. But other communities that do not receive bribes will think that it is unfair, because they do not get the same thing as the people who get it. This happens because of the lack of awareness of the dangers of bribery among small communities. This will be the beginning of a division that harms the community and the candidates.
Conclusion
Elections in Indonesia must be carried out in a healthy manner, prospective leaders and their supporters must have the awareness to respect each other and respect differences in order to create unity and integrity of the Indonesian nation as a whole. Elections are sacred activities that must be carried out properly and honestly without dropping and provoking each other. I hope that the upcoming elections will be better than this time, because elections are actually a place to compete for ideas, ideas and programs without any negative elements in it.

The Importance of Reading
(Thesis)
I personally think that reading is a very important activity in our life. Why do I say so?
(Arguments)
Firstly, by reading we can get a lot of knowledge about many things in the world such as Science, technology, sports, arts, culture, etc written in either books, magazines, newspaper, etc.
Secondly, by reading we can get a lot of news and information about something happening in any part of the world which we can see directly.
Another reason, reading can give us pleasure too. When we are tired, we read books, novels, comics, newspapers or magazines in the entertainment column such as comedy, short stories, quizzes, etc. To make us relaxed.
Lastly, reading can also take us to other parts of the world. By reading a book about Irian Jaya we may feel we're really sitting in the jungles, not at home in our rooms.
(Recommendation)
From the facts above, it's obvious that everyone needs to read to get knowledge, information and also entertainment. Or in summary we can say reading is truly important in our life.
